They didn’t give Ryker much time for contemplation back in his cell. He was quite pleased with that, all things considered, because every thought he did have about what had just happened in that interview room, about everything happening around him involving the agents from the FSB, made him mad. Seriously mad. Blood boiling mad. He needed to find a way to keep his head calm and rational.

A grotty meal later, and Ryker was back in the interview room. Tired, worn out. He wondered who would appear at the door. Bruno Hitchens was perhaps his preferred option. At least the consulate worker’s intentions were straightforward enough.

No. It wasn’t Hitchens. Georgiadis and Robertson.

‘The dynamic duo,’ Ryker said to them as Robertson closed the door. They both gave him an odd look before sitting.

Robertson appeared a little troubled by something. Georgiadis looked a little bit smug. Kind of like how she’d acted the previous night. What was with her? Of course, Ryker had mulled plenty about who within the police force was corrupt. Who was working with the Russians to implicate Ryker in a crime he couldn’t have possibly committed. How far up the chain did the deception go? Surely the ploy required input from someone with more seniority than these two. Yet Georgiadis’ manner...

‘How are you doing today?’ Robertson asked.

‘Wonderful,’ Ryker answered. ‘Never had so many people wanting to speak to me.’

Robertson looked like he didn’t know how to take that comment.

‘Where are the Russians now?’ Ryker asked.

A frown from Robertson. Nothing much from Georgiadis.

‘Which Russians?’ Robertson asked. ‘You mean Smolov and–’

‘No, I don’t mean Smolov. He’s not Russian. I mean the two Russian FSB agents who were in here talking to me earlier this morning.’

Robertson looked to his colleague then back to Ryker. ‘I don’t know anything about that. I haven’t been at the station all morning.’

‘What about you?’ Ryker asked Georgiadis.

‘Same,’ she said.

‘FSB?’ Robertson asked. ‘You mean, like...’

‘Secret agents. KGB. Yes, that’s exactly what I mean.’

‘This is... this is... okay,’ Robertson stuttered, and his confusion did seem genuine enough. What the hell was going on? ‘Let’s park that. I’m going to find out what on earth you’re talking about. But that’s not why we’re here.’

‘So why are you here?’

‘We have some progress in our investigation.’ Robertson shuffled the papers he’d brought with him. Kind of like how Xenakis had the day before.

‘Where’s your boss today?’ Ryker said.

‘My boss?’

‘Xenakis.’

‘She’s more senior than me, but she’s not technically my boss.’

‘I didn’t ask for a rundown of your corporate structure, I just asked where she is.’

‘Not here,’ Georgiadis said.

‘Anyway,’ Robertson continued. ‘We’ve taken two new witness statements over the last twenty-four hours, and, to put it simply, this doesn’t look good for you, Mr Ryker.’

Robertson spread out four pieces of paper in front of Ryker. Two witness statements, handwritten. Dated only that morning. The statements were in Greek and Ryker struggled to understand them fully. Understanding the spoken language was one thing, but he’d never come close to mastering the Greek alphabet.

‘This is.
